PROJECT SUMMARY

Urban Action is an annual journal of public affairs and civic engagement published in San Francisco. In the fall of 2012, I had the opportunity to publish two papers in this journal.

The first paper, Parking, Poverty, and Employment, explored the negative impact of parking enforcement penalties on San Francisco residents, particularly low-income populations. Through my research, I highlighted how high penalties and towing disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. Motivated by my own experiences with the parking enforcement system, I examined how decisions around fines are made and how they are applied, advocating for a more equitable approach.

The second paper, San Francisco’s Emergency Water Supply, focused on the condition of the city’s fire and drinking water systems. It addressed the existing problems and the potential dangers posed by earthquakes in the region. This paper was part of my broader studies on resiliency and emergency preparedness for my venture, Urban Thrivalist. I compiled my research into this report to raise awareness of the critical vulnerabilities in San Francisco’s infrastructure.
